The Battles Through Covid 19
After visiting Washington D.C. 2 times I really started to get interested in the memorials and learning the deep meaning. The World War II memorial was made to dedicate something to the people who fought and died throughout the war. I wanted to create the same thing because Covid 19 affected almost every single person in the world.
The front of my memorial is basically 2 separate tunnels, one leading to the side of the patients, the other leading to the frontlines. I wanted to include two separate wings to help show that there were 2 sides to fighting this virus. When you walk into the “Eyes of the patient,” side you see a few windows on the wall. One window shows the inside of a hospital room like the ICU. This shows how they lived, if it was with a ventilator or not. On the outside there is a statue holding a sign outside the window to show that no one was really let in. The next window showed the less significant side of the virus. People who got the light version were still isolated from everyone.
On the other side or the memorial is the “On the frontlines” side. When you walk in you also see 2 windows. One window showed the eyes of being a doctor or nurse. Seeing people struggle and make sure they aren’t alone through all this. Under that window there are pictures of people with mask makers from the long shifts. The next window shows the side of healthcare that wasn’t the hospital, so the Covid 19 testing sites, or EMTs. This window shows what their life was like working; under that window are pictures of what they had to wear to protect themselves.
At the end of those 2 tunnels leads into one big tunnel. This showed the different effects it had on other people, such as the families or other essential workers. Mental health was a huge problem during this time so that side would show the struggles. On the other side of the tunnel shows and describes how people had to change their lifestyle. It can show how people had to start working from home, or showing how people started to struggle financially so they had to change what they really needed because they were running low on money.
Nearing the end of the tunnel the walls are engraved with the peoples names that passed due to Covid 19, and engraved in another color are the names for the healthcare workers to thank them for their service.
When creating my memorial I wanted to use the structure of the tunnel because tunnels are known for being dark. Whenever we are little we die to drive through tunnels because the feeling of it being dark and mysterious. I wanted this to represent the dark time of 2020. Every detail mentioned described how this virus caused everyone’s life to go sort of dark for a little bit because we didn’t know what would actually happen. Now that we are near the end we see that light of life, just like when you reach the end of the tunnel you see that little bit of light of the day. I wanted this memorial to show no matter what can be going on in our lives no matter if it's just you, or the whole nation going through it, the situation will be just like a tunnel. It will be dark and feel weird for a little bit, but you will reach that light and get back to your normal life, or in this situation somewhat normal because we won't be fully normal.
There were many details I wanted to make sure that were in the memorial. Just like in week 2 of our online learning, I read an article describing how communities were at greater risk. This showed that I should make sure to include the people that struggled without actually getting the virus because it was a huge issue. I also want to make sure I include the lifestyle changes because our world will never be the same. We have to create a new norm, just like how Dr. Ibram wrote. In the week ⅚ we were learning about progress and hope. Just like how African-American people had to make a change in their life after something significant happened. Also just as the Covid 19 article in week ¾ explain the new norm for Chinese- Americans, because this virus was known as the “Chinese virus.” This made American citizens fear their kind.. Just because they are Chinese, or look like it they were treated poorly causing them to create a new lifestyle. These people had to keep distance from people so they wouldn’t get hurt. They also stayed inside more because they are feared by other Americans because of the way they look.
I do think sometime in the future we should create a memorial or something of the sort because it was a very significant event. If we are being honest the year 2020 is very significant to the future, many things will change due to Covid 19 and the BLM movement. I think that the memorial of Covid 19 (if we made one) should expand and show what still happened/happening. Just because we are in a global pandemic doesn’t stop our protests and our voices from wanting to be heard. Just like every significant year that goes into history textbooks, which will happen, get a memorial because many lives were changed. This year is no different, it's just in a different way.
