Week 7/8: To Protect and Serve Who?
In these past few weeks we’ve learned about the socio-economic circumstances which have kept African Americans down, now we’ll learn about the justice system, its flaws, and its role in oppression.
Journal 7/8aWith the death of George Floyd, and the ensuing onslaught of police brutality inflicted by the police on the protesters, do you think the police can be reformed? If not, why? And if so, how? Give three examples of how they can be reformed, and if not, give me three reasons why.

APUSH Cross-Over AssignmentThere’s been a not insignificant amount of discussion about the demonstrations recently. An extremely common topic is that of looting/riots. Some claim that riots only harm the communities they take place in, fuel more stereotypes about the rioters and that the violence toward the police is never necessary. Those on the other side believe that riots are instrumental in proving a point and getting attention, and that the peaceful protests have come and gone and been ignored. If you agree with the former, justify this with 2 historical precedents where this has happened, and if you agree with the latter, find me two historical events where rioting has achieved the goal they wanted.
Journal 7/8bIts easy to see why after seeing similar things like this happen in Ferguson and Baltimore, some are somewhat hopeless that things can change. Do you think that there’s hope for a better future in these protests? Could this be the start of something new? Tell me how you feel.
