As soon as I saw that making a playlist for our final project was an option, I immediately knew what I was going to do. As a dancer, music is the main way I connect with the world. I constantly have choreography running through my head and helping me understand the music further and deeper. Im amazed by the way song writers are able to write about day to day problems, yet still make it catchy and still have it spread awareness. Now more than ever Americans need to come together and I know Im not the only person who relies on music to help connect. So many people can relate over the simplest of songs. Down below are some songs that I believe relate the the things taking place right now. It contains everything from the acts of racism going on to how people my age may be feeling due to quarantine.

The first song I've put on there is “This is America” by Childish Gambino. Its probably obvious why too. ”Police be trippin' now (woo) Yeah, this is America (woo, ayy)”. George Floyds death is shaking America to its core. We will no longer let racism stand. This mad was pinned to the ground for 8 minutes and died due to a cop choking him with is knee.”You just a black man in this world You just a barcode, ayy”. “This is America” talks about all of the problems going on with the US at the moment. The music video is even more powerful if you take the time to watch it if you haven't already. Another one of the songs that goes along with the common theme is “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten. I put it on this playlist as a reminder to keep going. It may seem hopeless but we will make it to a point where everybody is actually equal. “And I don't really care if nobody else believes 'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me”.Standing by isn't enough anymore. We have to fight, no excuses anymore.
The next few songs on the playlist relate more to Coronavirus and teens living through this horrible pandemic. I know its taken a toll on me mentally and I know I cant be the only one. A lot of teens and adults struggle with mental health conditions such as depression. Not being able to see your friends and loved ones is hard when you rely on them to stay sane some days. When you're staying inside all day everyday its really easy to fall into that pit again. Once you're there its nearly impossible to escape again. Songs such as “All the Kids are Depressed”, “Idontwannabeyouanymore”, and “Dear Society” bring some more light to this.
Another song I made sure to include on the playlist is “Happy” by Pharell Williams. I know it may sound cheesy but hear me out. I know that whenever I hear this song I literally can not help but to smile and dance along with the music. So I was thinking it may do the same for others. In times like this is when we need to stay hopeful and remind ourselves to look on the bright side of things.
By listening to this playlist, I hope you can get an insight into whats going on in our world today. My goal was to make it as if you could get a sneak peek into my outlooks on all of the crazy things taking place right now. Like I mentioned before, music is my common ground with so many people. How has music helped you in your own life? How can you use music you make a difference in our world?
