Protest, Progress, and Hope
I will be writing about injustice in America today and in the past. My 3 topics will be about protest, progress, and hope. I will be using music to justify my opinion. The protest will be about what has been going on since African-Americans have had their freedom. Progress will be about what has changed in this country. Hope will be about if people have the desire to and will to change this country. In my essay, I would like to express the change that needs to happen.
Protest: a statement of action expressing disapproval of or objection to something. Protesting has started in 1830 and is still going on to this day. Protesting is important because it helps get your voice out there for it to be heard. When protesting people risk getting beaten, shot, arrested, death, and more for the greater good. Fighting major issues that can make this country the best it can be. Going out and protesting, and seeing and hearing the message they are speaking can change the way you look at things. The song that represents protest the most to me is Fight the Power by Public Enemy (clean version) - YouTube. In the song, Rapper Chuck D starts it off with 1989. This was another year that African- Americans faced discrimination. He wanted people to know the time that this happened for the future generations. He expressed the idea of people fighting the stereotypes of this country and to never give up on fighting for what you believe in.
Progress: move forward or onward in space and time. In today’s society, there are many views on the educational and economic progress of African Americans. A progress that has happened is that people like Imani Cezanne have gone to the IWPS Finals 2014, and presented a poem that was something that we all needed to hear ( A letter from Michelle Obama). She said “ from building buildings we were only smart enough to clean’’. This was part of the progress in American. A black man in office, a man that was trying to shape this country into greatness. Another thing of progress was the redlining that occurred in America for African-Americans. This changed when people protested to stop what was going on. The song that I chose to represent progress in America is Patti Smith - People Have The Power - YouTube This song represents an anthem for dreamers and to love. Pattie Smith wanted to incorporate the 60’s feel in the ’80s generation. She executed the idea of the progression that America faced.
Hope: a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. With Donald Trump in office, it’s easy to be despairing about the fate of our country. So many things have happened over the years for us to just give up, but we can’t do it. The discrimination has to stop for us to move as a unit. In The Great Migration, Mama and Walter Senior never gave up hope in their freedom and how far they were willing to go to achieve it. The importance of having hope in life is to improve our lives because envisioning a better future motivates you to take the steps to make it happen. The song that represents hope is Common, John Legend - Glory - YouTube. In the song, Common alludes to Jesus, Scripture, and Christianity. “Hands to heavens, no man, no weapon formed against, yes glory is destined sins that go against our skin become blessings”. He wanted to express the injustice that is being done and that there is light at the end of every tunnel.
In conclusion, the injustice in America is a very hard and emotional thing to talk about, but it needs to happen. The music that I chose is speaking the truth about how this country is. We can’t stop this if people are not willing to listen, discuss, and change. That is the only way we are going to get somewhere in the world. In the three topics that I wrote about, I feel as though all of them have a powerful message that can be interpreted in the right way. Protesting is something that is going on right now and look at where we are, the justice for George Floyd has been given. The progress of this country has changed greatly, but there are still majors things that need to change. Hope in this country is never going to die I feel. We have too much to live for and to see change is the most important. The generation of young people today has the longing to make this country what it needs to be. There does not need to be a repeating cycle, just a cycle of change.
