Hope for the Future
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” When we see injustice in the world we must come together to fight against it. Protest, progress, and hope are what goes into making a change. Coming together as a group to fight for or against something is a protest. As I’ve seen on the news and read articles about, currently, people are protesting the stay home orders, and the passing of George Floyd. Protesting is a way for people to express their opinion on something whether it be displeasure or bringing awareness to something. For a protest to start, there has to be hope. This hope starts from negativity, and all of the bad energy in a situation. This is the hope that fuels the fight for change. As young poet Laureate Gorman stated in her poem that I listened to, “Do not ignore the pain. Give it purpose. Use it.”
To show this theme of protest and hope, I created a playlist of about 15 songs, some from today some from a long time ago, but they all share this common theme of protest. Some of the songs are hopeful, others in the playlist express the opinion of the artist and what needs to be done to fulfill their wishes. I picked these songs because the lyrics are very powerful, I agree with their ideas, and they help me realize that we are still fighting everyday for the changes they’re writing about. Some of the songs on my playlist are pretty old, but the issues they’re about are still relevant to this day. As someone who has concerns politically, it is a problem for me to see that yes the issues have changed in law, but not in the people of America. There are a handful of issues I’ve read about in the past few weeks, such as about racism, xenophobia, and inequality. One article explained stereotypes that muslims face, and the discrimination that follows. Another spoke about redlining, which was when African Americans were forced into poorer homes while paying more money for these homes than normal. These problems are seen in the public eye as bad, yet the ignorance still exists.
In American society we have these ideas of what is wrong and what is right. Sometimes our political leaders don’t express enough concern about our American issues. When this happens we protest, shining light on what we believe is right, and trying to change the minds of people of the opposing sides. These protests don’t always have to be gathering in the streets with signs and chants. We can write songs, poems, stories, create art, anything that gets our messages heard by people around the world. That’s why I created this playlist with the common theme of protest. The creators of these songs all have a message they would like to say, and they do it through music. As people we have a voice, we have influence, and we can bring about change in our society through the hope and the courage to keep fighting. When we come together, there’s nothing that can stop us and nothing that can hush our voices.
