Dear People of the past
I am from the year 2020. I have decided to contact you because I figured you would know some about what I’m currently going through. We currently have a huge virus going around called the coronavirus. It's like the polio epidemic that you have going on. People are freaking out. Somehow people have found a way to use fear to back up their xenophobia. I know about 1879 people were reported a year from dying of polio, while we test a lot more he has 110k deaths so far and the year isn't even halfway through! We don't know what to do about it. Please give advice.
Yours truly,
The Future
Dear future person,
This is fascinating, I don't know how you are managing to send this! Now with this virus, you talk about it. If it is truly as big as you say you truly have a problem. However we haven't had much time to deal with the polio problem, They have just created a vaccine however,we have been more worried about African American rights. I'm sure you know but currently, we are still segregated and trying to fight for our rights. It's tough but I think it's working. I wish I could be more helpful to you in your time.
Sincerely
Civil rights goer
Dear Civil rights goer,
Actually that was another reason why I sent this. We are also doing black lives matter movement. People have been dying rapidly at the hands of police officers. Our current president Donald Trump is even laughing at the murders calling us thugs and telling the police to be brutal when they arrest us. It's really bad. Racists are even hiding behind the statement “All lives Matter” trying to invalidate our mass abuse. We don't know what to do anymore. Please send tips.
Forever yours,
Abused and not heard the community
Dear Abused and not heard community,
Wait, all of that is still happening? I just came from a speech by Martin Luther King and I thought things were getting better. Well, one thing we have been doing is protesting. We have been trying to keep it peaceful however some people riot. Both ways get attention but one is looked upon more proudly. The police still abuse and arrest us but at least we are making a statement. You said you were from the year 2020 so Dr. King should be about 91? If he is still alive you should ask him to make a speech. They are pretty powerful and I think they make a statement.
Best regards,
Hard-working activist
Dear Hardworking activist,
Sadly we no longer have Martin Luther King with us today. But we all learn about him today in our history books and his untimely death. We actually are trying to protest now. They are mostly peaceful but a couple has become violent and some people are using them to riot. However for the most part they stay peaceful. However, police do not care. They tear gas us and they arrest us for no good reason. They are even using rubber bullets. People are also trying to use Martin Luther King as an excuse for the abuse. Trying to say “ would Martin Luther King approve of you rioting?” Which would be a great question to ask him if he had not been assassinated so long ago. Maybe then we could ask him.
Speak to you soon,
Oppressed and depressed
Dear Oppressed and Depressed,
Martin gets assassinated? This is devastating news but I guess it is necessary to history. Honestly, this entire conversation has been incredibly devastating. I was hoping all the work we did now would make it so my kids could have a nice future. You make it sound like the future doesn't get any better. Why do all this work have to be done again in a few years' time? Will things ever get better? If not why even try now?
Cordially,
Sad and lost of hope
Dear Sad and lost of hope,
I am so sorry for telling you about Martin Luther King, that was a mistake. However, YOU CAN NOT LOSE HOPE! Your generation is the reason we are integrated today. We go to school with whoever we want wherever we can. There are black people who have jobs that we never could have gotten without your work. We can eat where we want, we can drink where we want. All that was because of you. Things aren’t perfect but things are better. That is always the hope. You are going through a polio epidemic while making history and changing lives. That is amazing. You can not underestimate how much you are doing for the future. The hope isn't perfect, the hope is for the better.
Yours respectively
The hopeful
Dear hopeful,
Thank you for the encouraging words. That was really needed and I must say; you should use these same words for yourself. I'm sure what you are going through will make future generations later. The protest should be helping. It worked for many other groups for example women’s rights. Women can vote because of what they did. You are going through this horrific coronavirus and you are still managing to fight for the people. That is the exact same thing that we are doing. So logically you can only assume you would get the same result. I wish you luck.
Best wishes,
Coretta Scott King
Dear Mrs.King
If I knew that I was talking to you I would have been so much more careful about my statements. I apologize for your husband however he is an inspiration to many. As are you. I wish you the same luck.
With appreciation,
Lexi Martin
