Dear Person from the Past,
Hi, I’m Lauren, Im 16 years old and I’m from Florida. These days have been crazy lately. There's a virus that's going around called the Coronavirus (Or covid-19 for short). And what makes it so bad is the fact that some people are scared of people just because of their race, and their ignorance about what’s going on. They’re reacting out of their ignorance, especially towards Asians, Chinese, etc, just because it came from China. It’s upsetting because instead of just taking the necessary safety precautions, their blatant ignorance is causing them to act differently towards this race. Instead of coming together around these scary times, it’s like they’re trying to separate because they're scared due to their lack of knowledge. Has something similar ever happened back then? I would love to hear about it.
Sincerely, Lauren.
Dear Lauren.
I actually do have a story that’s so similar, but very different. It’s 1942, right after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The government rounded up and relocated 120,000 Californians of Japanese descent to “Relocation Camps” Although a lot of them were born here, making them American Citizens just as much as anyone else born on these lands. Funny thing is, they never even committed a crime. They did it just because they were scared that it would happen again, or they were working with outsiders. Even after everything was over, life didn’t go back to normal for the Japanese, their homes were stripped of their belongings and businesses, forcing them to start over in America, which could be very tough. You could say they were reacting out of ignorance as well.
From Susan
Dear Susan,
Wow! That’s so crazy. I wish people wouldn’t treat people so differently just because they can. At the end of the day we’re all equal. I wish people would have all the information before they decided to react. Just because someone looks different, doesn’t mean they are different. People need to get to know someone before they judge them. At the end of the day we’re all human.
Sincerely Lauren.
PS, What thoughts would you have about what’s going on?
Dear Lauren,
If only everyone had your mindset. Sadly people don’t and automatically just react out of ignorance. But I think that those people need to know all the information about this Coronavirus, and just use the safety precautions given, because everyone is dealing with it, not just them. To me, it sounds like times have changed, but not really. You’re so young and intelligent, so try and help spread as much information as you can. They always say the youth is the voice of the future, so be just that. I enjoyed talking with you and hope for the best!
From, Susan
Dear Susan,
I enjoyed talking with you as well! I’m happy you understand where I’m coming from, America could be such a better place if people were treated equally, I hope to hear from you again soon, I’m pretty sure you have plenty of stories just based on things I’ve read in a textbook.
